The latissimus dorsi is the broadest muscle of the human back. It extends, abducts and internally rotates the arm. In terms of the body shape this muscle has two different effects: firstly it influences the V-shape of the back, especially in athletic individuals; and secondly, because it wraps over other muscles such as the erector spinae and the serratus, it also tends to smooth out the general features of the lower back.
